Showing off their soft side, Southtowne Lanes has released their second full album called Give Up the Ghost this past week. Southtowne Lanes is an emo-alternative band from Eugene, Ore., that regularly visits Reno. Give up the Ghost is an entirely new direction for the “overly emotional” band, showcased by the increased amount of clean, softer vocals done by the band’s lead vocalist James Giles. Southtowne Lanes still have that hardcore-emo-edge that fans expect, but Giles is definitely showing off his softer side. For those who enjoy the harder jams, look no further than the songs “The Circle” and “A Storm.” Songs “And into the Black” and “When Sun Hits Water” have a brighter, more experimental sound, coming off as more melodic. Overall, Southtowne Lanes has put out a well put-together album, and seem to be taking a big step into the direction of alternative, but still make their emo essence shine through.
